Waste Management/ Gestão dos Resíduos Sólidos Urbanos

Here are several informations related with my current research project, currently developed under the supervision of Luis Evelio Garcia, professor of Renewable Energies Engineering at the Federal University of Latin-American Univeristy (UNILA):

Energy recovery scenario for the municipal solid waste of the city of Foz do Iguaçu/ Estudo do potencial de recuperação energética a partir de resíduos sólidos em Foz do Iguaçu. 


Visit to Foz do Iguaçu Landfill

Last week  I had the opportunity to visit the Municipal Landfill of Foz do Iguaçu City, and well I must say that I was impressed by its organization and administration, basically the city is pretty clean and there are some recycling initiatives as well as a Waste Managament plan ongoing, still many things to be improved but as a border city  between Paraguay and Brazil, is an example for the region.

It was really  overwhelming at the beginning to see all that amount of waste incoming… And let’s face it, we aren’t aware about our consumption patterns in any way! And whenever we talk about waste, is like we were talking about life in the universe… Most of people don’t care about their rubbish afterwards they drop it on the trash. Likewise when we know that  part of the pollution load of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), in most cases, has a high potential for energy use; of course this requires different types of technologies and processes that can be physical, chemical, thermochemical and biological.

And that’s what we are trying to do at my University- UNILA (Federal University of Latino-American Integration), to evaluate the energy potential of the The study of energy MSW to integrate and apply this energy-recovering options to the city. The recovery of MSW in urban areas becomes a object of research with great potential influence in economic and environmental aspects.
